PHFI-UKC Wellcome Trust Programme – Research Fellowships

This programme invites applications for Research Fellowships based in India and in the UK. These fellowships are aimed at capacity building in public health research and are open for faculty / research staff at PHFI/IIPH.

In India - Applications are invited for two year training research fellowships in public health. This effort aims to support young researchers to accelerate a research career in the field of public health under supervision. The fellowships are based at PHFI and/or its Institutes in India and are aimed at capacity building in public health research. 

In UK - This effort is designed to support mid-career staff at PHFI/IIPHs who have substantial experience in public health but require research skills enhancement that is not possible within the PHFI/IIPH network but is possible at one of the partner institutions of the UK consortium. The duration of the fellowship is expected to be not more than 9 months, with many fellowships of shorter duration.

Announcement for Research Fellowships

November 2012

Under the Wellcome Trust Capacity Building Programme of the Public Health Foundation of India and a consortium of UK institutions, applications are invited for two types of research fellowships: India-based and UK-based.  These fellowships are available only to persons working with PHFI/IIPH.  These fellowships aim to support researchers at PHFI/IIPH to accelerate a research career under supervision. 

India-based Research Fellowships

These fellowships would be based at PHFI/IIPH and are aimed at capacity building in public health research.  These fellowships are generally two years in duration.  Applications for a one year fellowship may be considered if there is a clear link with institutional research capacity building.

Description

The estimated amount of funds available for each two year research fellowship is Indian Rupees 2 million and for the one year fellowship is Rupees 1 million. Each fellow would be paired with a supervisor from PHFI/IIPH and one from its partner universities in UK. Applications addressing the health system/policy priorities and high disease burden conditions of India are encouraged. Each fellowship would have to have a tangible product at completion such as a publishable paper in a peer reviewed journal. These fellowships are expected to be part time along with other responsibilities at PHFI/IIPH.

Eligibility

The applicant must be an employee of PHFI/IIPH.  The applicant must possess a post graduate degree from an accredited institution in any domain relevant to public health, including non-medical sciences, social sciences and humanities. If the candidate has a doctoral degree, then it should have been completed no more than five years ago. Demonstrated research experience would be an advantage.

Part 1:  To be sent by the Candidate (file name - last name of applicant followed by WTP RF India)

  1. A cover letter stating that you are applying for the India-based research fellowship and how you meet the eligibility criteria
  2. A three-page (font size 12, single spaced) essay on a research proposal of interest to you and how this fellowship would help with your career goals
  3. Budget description and justification
  4. Curriculum vitae
  5. Transcripts and experience certificates from previous education/training (scanned copies)
  6. Names of your referees

Part 2:Letters of Recommendation

  • Two recommendation letters are mandatory but a third letter is allowed.
  • Please arrange for these recommendation letters to be sent directly by your referees by email to wtp.fellowships@phfi.org

Deadline

Complete applications including letters of recommendations for the India-based research fellowships must be received by 7 January 2013.  Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.  The applications will be reviewed by a panel comprising of members from PHFI/IIPHs and the UK partner institutions. The shortlisted candidates will be interviewed for final decision.

UK-based Research Fellowships

Background

The UK-based research fellowships are designed to support mid-career staff at PHFI/IIPHs who have substantial experience in public health but require research skills enhancement that is not possible within the PHFI/IIPH network but is possible at one of the partner institutions of the UK consortium. This fellowship is aimed at capacity building through:

  • An opportunity to develop tangible research skills with an experienced supervisor in UK, including skills in analysis, grant writing and manuscript writing
  • An opportunity to undertake one or two courses in UK that directly relate to the goal of the research fellowship

The duration of the fellowship is expected to be no more than 9 months, with most fellowships of shorter duration.  Each fellow would also have an India supervisor for guidance.  Each fellowship would have to have a tangible product at completion such as a publishable paper or a grant proposal.

Potential candidates are encouraged to plan the fellowship under guidance of senior faculty at PHFI/IIPH and contact potential UK supervisors in partner institutions to discuss the possibility and content of the fellowship. In case a candidate is unable to identify a UK faculty in partner institutions relating to their area of interest, a list of potential UK supervisors along with their areas of expertise can be made available to the candidate upon request.

The following costs will be covered:

  • Living expenses in UK for the duration of the fellowship according to the guidelines
  • Family support stipend for the duration of the fellowship according to the guidelines
  • One return airfare to UK
  • UK visa fees
  • Host institution bench cost if applicable
  • Travel within UK if related to the goal and work under this fellowship

Up to two short courses may also be funded during the period in the UK if they are directly linked with the goal of the fellowship and there is justification provided.

  • A cover letter stating that you are applying for the UK-based research fellowship and how you meet the eligibility criteria
  • A rationale for the fellowship (up to five-pages) indicating what research enhancement is to be achieved through this fellowship, how this would be achieved, how this would help with her/his career goals, how this would benefit work at PHFI/IIPH, and how the proposed UK supervisor for the fellowship is an appropriate one
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Names of your referees
  • Proposed start date and duration of the fellowship
  • Attached form certified by the UK partner institution where the fellowship is to be based

Part 2:  Letters of Recommendation

  • Two recommendation letters are mandatory but a third letter is allowed
  • Please arrange for these recommendation letters to be emailed directly by your referees to wtp.fellowships@phfi.org
